How to combine, split, reorder, rotate, and remove PDF pages

Organize PDF pages into the exact file you need while keeping the original safe and the final page order correct.

Think of a PDF as a stack of paper. A page organizer lets you pick up, move, copy, rotate, remove, or divide the sheets.

Work on copies when the documents matter.

Combine several files into one PDF

In a PDF editor, choose Combine files, Merge, or Insert pages:

  1. Add the PDFs or source files.
  2. Put them in the right order.
  3. Expand thumbnails if you need to move individual pages.
  4. Remove duplicates and blanks.
  5. Combine and save under a new name.

Adobe Acrobat can combine PDFs, Office files, images, and other supported files, then lets you rearrange thumbnails before saving. Its official combine guide shows the current desktop steps.

On a Mac, Preview can do this without another app: show thumbnails in one PDF, then drag the other PDFs from Finder into the sidebar.

Reorder pages

Open the thumbnail or Organize Pages view. Drag a page to its new position. Watch for a blue line or insertion marker showing where it will land.

After moving pages, read the last sentence of one page and the first sentence of the next. Thumbnails can look right while the story is wrong.

Rotate a sideways page

Select the page thumbnail and choose rotate left or right. Make sure you rotate the page itself, not only your temporary view.

Save, close, and reopen. If it is sideways again, you changed the view instead of the file.

Remove a page

Select the thumbnail and choose Delete. Save as a copy until you confirm the removed page is truly unnecessary.

Be careful with numbered forms and contracts. A blank page may be intentional, and missing page numbers can make a document look incomplete.

Split one PDF into several PDFs

Use Split, Extract pages, or Print selected pages to PDF.

Common splits include:

  • one file per chapter
  • one invoice per customer
  • the signature pages only
  • a specific page range
  • one file every set number of pages

If you extract pages, check whether the tool is set to delete them from the original. Usually you want copies.

A no-special-tool fallback

To make a new PDF from selected pages:

  1. Open the PDF and choose Print.
  2. Enter the pages, such as 2-4, 8.
  3. Choose Save as PDF or your system PDF printer.
  4. Save the new file.

This works well for simple extraction. It may flatten interactive forms, comments, layers, tags, links, or bookmarks, so use a full PDF tool when those features matter.

Check the finished stack

Confirm:

  • total page count
  • first and last page
  • page numbers are continuous where expected
  • every page is upright
  • no private page from another document slipped in
  • bookmarks and accessibility still work if required

Then rename the final file clearly and keep the component files until delivery is confirmed.

One PDF job at a time.
